Weather Wisdom from Local Dinghy Champ By Hank Boissoneault.
As you can see [from the data below] the wind range is 37 mph down to 0 MPH. The average from memory tends to be about 9-10 mph although this site has 6.9mph(I will look for this information). We have been having a windy spring or so it seems. Sandusky Bay is on Lake Erie; however, the bay is protected from most angles from the lake. One thing that happens in Sandusky Bay is that we tend to get a lot of chop. In an Opti, I would say they feel like waves from many directions. The key seems to be able to keep the boat moving through the waves. Pointing, while always important, may be secondary at times to keeping the boat moving in the general direction. It has been my experience that you want to head
towards the shore in most wind conditions. As you approach the shore
line you usually get headed thus allowing for a nice lift into the
weather mark. This is true whether you are heading towards Cedar point
(wind North- North east wind) or towards the sailing club (wind
west-south west). An East wind would take most of the shore line away
thus having to play the shifts in the middle of the course.
Cedar point has added a ton of black top over the years and plays a
role in the middle of the day as the surface heats up. I have noticed
that the wind toward the weather marks on either shore line becomes a
little trickier as the day goes on.
At times there are lanes of power boat traffic that will effect the course. The shoreline on Cedar Point's side becomes a virtual highway during the day with two lane traffic in and out(heading north -west along the shore). The sailing club side also has many marinas, the traffic from which head toward the lake in a northerly flow that will cause the chop effect I was referring too. I Hope this is helpful information. Most of what I mentioned will be true 90% of the time with that 10% surfacing during the Opti event...just to make a liar out of me.
